Letter to our readers ...

As I continue to move horses from this blog to the main memorial, as well as track new fatalities, it's become clearer than ever that our readers have been integral to this memorial's success.

If you review the memorial you'll see that many of the horses have been brought to us by people around the world ... many of whom actually witnessed the horse's last moments.

It's time again for me to thank you all, from the bottom of my heart, for helping to build a dignified memorial to the valiant horses who've perished in service to the so-called Sport of Kings. This memorial would not be what it is today without your help and for caring enough about the racehorses to visit this site.

A special thanks to two friends -- from Hawaii and Louisville, Kentucky -- who've regularly volunteered to submit countless horses over the years, and who've offered moral support at those times when I've become discouraged in this work to the point of wanting to quit.

Soho Henie

This 3yo bay filly by Muqtarib out of Henie suffered a fractured distal left tibia and proximal right tibia while breezing and was euthanized.

Ole Rugged Cross

This 4yo dark-bay colt by Repent out of Carrenia suffered a condylar fracture of his right foreleg while breezing in the morning and was euthanized.

Unnamed horse

According to CHRB Vet's List for Los Alamitos, dated 3/8/09: "One equine death was reported this week due to racing injuries." But no other details, including the horse's name, were disclosed. This withholding of information seems to be on the increase. If you know who this horse is, please let us know so we can respectfully post his or her name on this memorial. This horse joins the others indexed herein as "unnamed" and is included in our count. Rest in peace.

Timber Prince

This 3yo dark-bay colt by Ochoco (Mr. Prospector) by Royalty Image suffered a left front comminuted fracture medial sesamoid and was euthanized two days later, 3/7/09.

This 7yo chestnut gelding by Rahy out of Ms. Teak Wood broke down in left front leg, was splinted and vanned off, then subsequently euthanized. Contributed by reader in Bryan, Texas.
