IN MEMORIAM

A history of the valiant horses
who have perished in service to
the “sport of kings”

Horses lay down their life in a race or work, in full view of their spectators.
Often, in the past, the fate of injured horses was hidden from the general public.
But today, we document the hard work and sacrifice exacted from racehorses,
and we'll continue until the games are over.

Tribute to Michael

At the pinnacle of success and genius,
before the pain and controversy,
he gave us a body of work,
a masterpiece.

He wanted to give us more,
but it was time to go.

Renas Selection (QH) ~
almost another unknown warrior

Gee thanks, Equibase, for not mentioning the terrible spill that occurred at Sam Houston yesterday, 6/13/09, at the finish line. It was a $5K claiming race (350yd) for Quarter Horses. According to chron.com: "In the seventh race at Sam Houston Race Park, jockey Saul Ramirez suffered a separated shoulder in a spill at the finish line. Renas Selection, his mount, flipped and had to be euthanized on the racetrack." According to Equibase: "Renas Selection outrun."

One has to wonder about Equibase's policies and procedures for observing and reporting track accidents and deaths ~ especially when these occur right in front of the crowd for all to see. It is this secrecy that, in part, has the public searching daily for
(and finding) these horses.

Know these horses? Seen them at the track? While the racing world watched the Belmont Stakes last Saturday, 6/6/09, Tranquility Farm and Southern California Thoroughbred Rescue were coordinating the rescue of these two Thoroughbred racehorses from Euclid auction in Southern California. The industry castoffs, 4yo gelding Ginobili by In Excess and 4yo colt Lulu's Nick by Skimming, will be cleaned up and nursed back to health and the nonracing life they deserve.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Casualties of war

Two-year-old chestnut colt Dalton (see his post) is one of the recent losses on the battlefield of racing.

He was making a valiant effort in the stretch during his debut in a maiden special weight at Philadelphia Park on 6/9/09 when he broke down. His jockey pulled him up, but Dalton was subsequently euthanized on the track. On this memorial, he is No. 1,180 (since August 2005). May he rest in peace.

I just wrote to my friend at Tranquility Farm, where she has been picking up the pieces of racing's wastage for most of her life. The broken and damaged, physically and mentally. The castoffs of the industry. The unwanted. While racing fans were watching the Belmont Stakes the other day (and I had the TV on but couldn't bring myself to watch the horses run), she was rescuing two racehorses off a local feedlot. I told her I have posted 180 on-track fatalities since January 2009 (back when I was seriously thinking about quitting the memorial project because it seems so futile at times, as
nothing changes).

That 180 does not include the almost 100 breakdowns on Warhorse I haven't yet confirmed as fatal nor racing-stress-related illness and injury ultimately leading to permanent damage and/or death nor the countless unreported breakdowns and deaths we'll never
know about.

Our numbers represent data compiled by just one editor (me) with limited time, and the help of a few readers, to document these incidents. No one knows the full scope of racing's death toll.

This is a horse crisis.

It is unacceptable.

It must end.

UNNAMED: four fatalities at Hollywood Park
May 20-24, 2009

CHRB Stewards Minutes for May 20-24, 2009, report there were four deaths during those four days but does not disclose the horses' names or whether they died as a result of racing or training injuries. We can speculate who's dead by analyzing race results; who's mentioned (or not) in Vet's Lists, Steward's Minutes, forums, etc.; what horses disappear from the backside or racing/training; by checking the pedigree database, contacting the tracks, sharing information, etc. Through the process of deduction, we can surmise who's still with us and who isn't. And there are people across the country doing just that.

But because the industry is not mandated to operate transparently, we may not have proof of a horse's death. So the horse remains unnamed and slips from this life in secret. For the industry, withholding of information is a position of power and self-protection. For us, lack of details doesn't diminish the fact that horses are dying daily. If this memorial, and all similar sites combined, were to stop, the public would still know the truth about the racehorse's plight. The days of denial are over, and truth prevails; entertainment horses are paying with their lives, whether openly or in secret.
To all the unnamed: rest in peace.

UNNAMED: two fatalities at Los Alamitos,
May 12-17, 2009

CHRB Stewards Minutes reports two racing fatalities over this five-day period. Since the report does not explicitly state the names and genders of these horses, we have posted them in the Index as "unnamed; gender unknown" and included them in the count. However, two horrific breakdowns were reported ~ Rail Rider
(broke both legs) and Jess Mandy (Quarter Horse) (broke leg past
the wire) ~ which likely were fatal. We've posted them on Warhorse until we can confirm their deaths and respectfully
place them on the memorial.

UNNAMED: two fatalities at Hollywood,
May 13-17, 2009

CHRB Stewards Minutes report there were two deaths during this period but do not disclose the names or whether the deaths were racing/training-related (nondisclosure, the latest trend in Stewards Minutes reporting). Various horses were injured over those four days, so we assume the two deaths were among them. But since we can't confirm who really died, we can't post them on the memorial. This certainly protects the connections, but disrespects the horses. May the fallen racehorses rest in peace.
