I think we need to remember that in the horseracing dream of glory and riches (or at least breaking even), the equine athletes are often babies, still developing, and asked (forced!) to give to the extreme, with the stress of living unnaturally, locked up in stalls without other horses, training and training, and then performing the ultimate maximum effort on the track, on fragile limbs ... no wonder they're sick, injured, and dying. And of course we have to remember that horseracing on the surface is all about tradition, grand sport, pomp and pageantry ... but underneath it's just a filthy gambling game at the expense of magnificent sensitive creatures ... in the human's game of money and greed, a public pastime in which the players soon forget the carnage they've witnessed, where equines are the broken toys. ~Connie, editor

In this work you can only do what you can do ... no one in the world has the power to stop this bloodshed except God Himself ... horseracing is a blight on this Earth and the galaxy ... all we can do is pray that it will end. Our memorial for the horses is symbolic at best, with countless horses lost, crippled, slaughtered and eaten. I understand totally why you can't attend or watch the races. I can never thank you enough for your contribution to this memorial. It is yours as much as mine. Never forget that. You will be remembered for what you did and tried to do for the horses, God's masterpiece of the Animal Kingdom.

Horses who have died as a direct result of injuries incurred at the track, in training or racing, including pre- and post-race (or training) incidents, are eligible. Incidents in the saddling paddock or walking ring prior to the race, or walking off the track afterward, are included, as we view these as part of the horse's work, inherent with the dangers of schooling and stresses at the track leading up to the race or exercise itself.

Referred to only as a horse, without further detail about him/her, this racehorse was thought to have either suffered a heart attack or clipped heels with a rival, causing him/her to fall and break both front legs. The horse tried over and over to stand but could not. Several minutes later, a vet arrived and put the horse down in full view of the horrified crowd. Contributed by reader in Ireland.

CHRB Stewards Minutes for May 20-24, 2009, report there were four deaths during those four days but does not disclose the horses' names or whether they died as a result of racing or training injuries. We can speculate who's dead by analyzing race results; who's mentioned (or not) in Vet's Lists, Steward's Minutes, forums, etc.; what horses disappear from the backside or racing/training; by checking the pedigree database, contacting the tracks, sharing information, etc. Through the process of deduction, we can surmise who's still with us and who isn't. And there are people across the country doing just that.

But because the industry is not mandated to operate transparently, we may not have proof of a horse's death. So the horse remains unnamed and slips from this life in secret. For the industry, withholding of information is a position of power and self-protection. For us, lack of details doesn't diminish the fact that horses are dying daily. If this memorial, and all similar sites combined, were to stop, the public would still know the truth about the racehorse's plight. The days of denial are over, and truth prevails; entertainment horses are paying with their lives, whether openly or in secret.

However, two horrific breakdowns were reported ~ Rail Rider
(broke both legs) and Jess Mandy (Quarter Horse) (broke leg past
the wire) ~ which likely were fatal. We've posted them on Warhorse until we can confirm their deaths and respectfully
place them on the memorial.

CHRB Stewards Minutes report there were two deaths during this period but do not disclose the names or whether the deaths were racing/training-related (nondisclosure, the latest trend in Stewards Minutes reporting). Various horses were injured over those four days, so we assume the two deaths were among them. But since we can't confirm who really died, we can't post them on the memorial. This certainly protects the connections, but disrespects the horses. May the fallen racehorses rest in peace.

This talented 4yo bay gelding by Crusader Sword out of Twice Forbidden (Spectacular Bid) was jogging clockwise along the outside rail after his work when a horse who was working in the opposite direction, and had blown the turn and bolted, collided with him. After Tin Cup Chalice received 90 minutes of care and treatment on the track, the decision had to be made to euthanize him due to an apparent spinal injury that paralyzed him behind.
